English loanwords perceived in King Chulalongkorn’s Letters

Abstract
This research articleaimed to study English loanword strategies perceived in King Chulalongkorn’s letters to Queen Sri Bajarindra during His Majesty’s first visit to Europe in A.D. 1897. The findings revealed the total of 363 English loanwords categorized as 221 loanwords by transcription (60.88 %), 124 loanwords by translation (34.16 %), 8 loanwords by the combination of translation and transcription (2.20 %), 3 loanwords by syllable deletion (0.83 %), and 7 loanwords by compounding (1.93 %). The instances of each category of loanwords could reflect the English loanword strategies used in the Thai language during the reign of King Chulalongkorn.
