The representation of a “husband – wife” in northeastern Thai country music literature

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the implication of meaning of husband – wife and the analyze the representation of the husband – wife which appeared in northeastern Thai country music literature, by using the representation theory and collecting data from northeastern Thai country music literature that has content about the husband – wife published during the year 1964 – 2017, a total of 150 songs. The results showed that the interpretation of the husband – wife being condemned, being kept secret, polygamy, being a good husband – wife, the husband being disloyal, the husband behaving inappropriately, violent husband, homosexual husband, suffering wife, wife being a sexual object, wife being under power, wife challenging the culture, the wife temporarily tempering and the wife with a legal status. As for the analysis of representation of husband – wife, there was a sexual interaction between spouses, showing the love of husband – wife, the identity of the husband – wife and the attitude of the society towards the husband – wife. The representation of the husband – wife in various ways reflected that northeastern Thai country music literature influenced on the way of life of the common family in determination of roles, duties, ideas, beliefs and practices of the husband – wife in the society.
