Temporal Conjunctions in Khmer Texts

Abstract
The objective of this article was to analyze the types of temporal conjunctions in Khmer texts. This research is qualitative. The research data were collected from 30 Khmer news, 10 general Khmer articles, and 5 speeches by Khmer social leaders. Data analysis was based on the concept of discourse analysis. The results showed that there were five types of temporal conjunctions: Firstly, those which indicate the relationship of preceding events such as លុះ “when” and ក្រោយពី “after”. Secondly, those which indicate the relationship of later events such as ទើប “then” and ហើយ “then, after that”. Thirdly, those which indicate the relationship of simultaneous events such as ខណៈ “while” and នៅពេលដែល “while, at that time”. Fourthly, those which indicate the beginning of event such as ចាប់ពី “since, from” and តាំងតែពី “since, from”. Fifthly, those which indicate the end of event such as រហូតដល់ “until” and លុះដល់ “until”.
