Representation and Construction of Animal in Collection of Short Stories ‘That Night of the Year of the Tiger and Other Animal Stories’ of Jadet Kamjorndet

Abstract

A collection of short stories on ‘That Night of the Year of the Tiger and Other Animal Stories’ of Jadet Kamjorndej was the current literary work of the South East Asian Writers Awards or SEAWRIT in the category of short stories, which has strategies to present stories that were outstanding in bringing animals into the stories in presenting each short story. This research aimed to analyze representation and the construction of “animals” in the collection of short stories on ‘That Night of the Year of Tiger and Other Animal Stories’ of Jadet Kamjorndej from the perspective of eco-criticism under the framework of anthropocentric view. The results showed that representation in the collection of short stories on ‘That Night of the Year of the Tiger and Other Animal Stories’  expressed  representation of  11 human behaviors from 9 animal species and it appeared that author constructed the characteristics of animals to reflect human behavior by construction of characters of animals to resemble human beings both in characters, behaviors, feelings; moreover, It also presented the state of political, social and economic problems through various signs. Mostly the construction operated on the anthropocentric view.
