Relationship between Language and Identity of Tai Koh Kong in Cambodia

Abstract

This research paper aims to study the relationship between language and identity of Tai Koh Kong in Koh Kong Province Cambodia. In this study, the researcher used the concept of ethnic identity to collect ethnographic data in three communities: Tropeang Rung, Koh Kapi, and Praek Svay in Khemarak Phoumin District, Koh Kong Province, Cambodia.  To conduct the study, the survey was applied for participant and non-participant observation including the method of conversation with the Tai Koh Kong people by asking their personal history, community history, beliefs, rituals and daily life in the community.


The results showed that language ​​and identities of Tai Koh Kong are inextricably linked. Language is a tool that presents the identity of the Tai Koh Kong people by using names, the use of language in daily life and ethnography of communication. Therefore, the use of language can make the people of Tai Koh Kong present their identity and adopt themselves in a society that are same and different from others.
