Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) examine the needs for organizing a learning environment; 2) develop a learning environment model based on social media platforms; and 3) investigate the effects of implementing the model, including students’ learning achievement and their opinions toward the learning environment model based on social media platforms to promote self-directed learning among undergraduate students. The study was conducted using a research and development approach. The sample consisted of undergraduate students enrolled in the course *Sports and Exercise*, selected through simple random sampling, with 30 students from each institution, totaling 60 students. The research instruments used in the experiment were: 1) a pre-test and post-test, and 2) an opinion questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and dependent t-test. The research findings revealed that: 1) The needs for the model included tools that allow easy access to information, facilitate understanding of content, and enable convenient exchange of opinions among peers and instructors. The preferred social media platforms included Facebook, LINE, and YouTube. In addition, students preferred blended learning combining online and on-site instruction, together with online exercises. 2) The developed model consisted of eight components: input, inquiry/search, online learning, self-directed learning, output/product, social media platforms, database, and application. 3) The results of implementing the model showed that students’ learning achievement after studying through the learning environment model based on social media platforms was significantly higher than before learning at the .05 level. Moreover, students’ overall opinions toward the instructional model were at a high level.
