An Integrated Approach to Problem-Based Learning and Coaching for Promoting Lifelong Learning Skills among Higher Education Learners

Abstract

This article aims to propose an approach for integrating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with Coaching to promote lifelong learning skills among higher education learners. Twenty-first-century education requires learners to possess analytical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning. However, traditional learning models still have limitations in developing these competencies. The integration of Problem-Based Learning and Coaching consists of four stages: 1) Planning and Problem Identification, 2) Analysis and Implementation, 3) Synthesis and Collaborative Evaluation, and 4) Reflection and Feedback. PBL facilitates learning through complex, real-world problems and situations, while Coaching supports the learning process through techniques such as powerful questioning, active listening, constructive feedback, and reflective thinking. In this approach, instructors serve as facilitators and coaches who encourage learners’ self-discovery. As a result, learners develop problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, teamwork, self-directed learning, and metacognitive awareness of their own thinking processes. These competencies are essential for lifelong learning and adaptability in the digital economy era.
