AESTHETICS OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS: MULTICULTURAL IDENTITY AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF ETHNIC GROUP IN NAKHON PHANOM PROVINCE

Abstract

This article aims to study 1) The foundations and aesthetic context of music and performing arts of ethnic groups in Nakhon Phanom province; 2) Analyze the relationship between aesthetic activities, happiness and ways of life; and 3) Propose guidelines for the conservation, revitalization, and extension of aesthetic culture to promote sustainable social well-being. This qualitative research collected data through in-depth interviews with six key informants selected using purposive sampling. These included two policy and academic experts, two local wisdom keepers/teachers, and two community members. Auxiliary observation was also conducted in the study area. Data were analyzed using triangulation and content analysis. The study findings revealed that the local aesthetics of Nakhon Phanom are rooted in the “Five Elements of Nature” (the sun, the moon, rivers, forests, and mountains) and the Mekong River cultural ecosystem, which has shaped the multicultural identities of the nine ethnic groups. Traditional music and performing arts, such as Saek Ten Sak, So Thang Bang, and Phu Thai dance, serve as significant cultural spaces for ethnic groups to express, exchange, and collectively maintain their multicultural identities. These aesthetic activities play an important role as mechanisms to promote holistic well-being in six dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual. They not only stimulate positive emotions but also strengthen unity, trust, and the resilience of social capital. Regarding sustainable development guidelines, it is essential to adhere to the “Three Principles of Righteousness”: accordance with religious principles, traditions, and law, by integrating the conservation of traditional roots with technology and the creative economy, in order to concretely enhance the quality of life of local people.
