FACTORS INFLUENCING ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ROAD USERS IN COMMUNITIES OF RAYONG PROVINCE

Abstract
The purposes of this research were 1) To study public levels of agreement on factors affecting road traffic accidents in communities in Rayong Province, 2) To compare public opinions on the factors according to personal characteristics, including gender, occupation, education level, and vehicle ownership, and 3) To provide a proper guideline to prevent and reduce road traffic accidents according to the community context of Rayong Province. A quantitative research design was implemented. The sample group was of 400 residents who were road users selected through accidental sampling in Rayong Province. The research instrument used to collect the data was a questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.93. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistics including independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. If a significant difference was found, pairwise comparisons would be implemented using Scheffe’s method. The findings revealed that the overall level of public opinions on factors affecting road traffic accidents was moderate. And the highest mean score was the factor of traffic law enforcement by police officers with ( = 3.46), followed by driver factor with (
= 3.43), and driver behavior factor with (
= 3.34), respectively. The results of comparison of public perceptions classified by personal characteristics, including gender, occupation, education level, and vehicle ownership showed that the variables significantly influenced public perceptions of factors affecting road traffic accidents at the level of 0.05. The findings also indicated that effective law enforcement and proper driver behavior could prevent road accidents. Therefore, relevant authorities should put emphasis on the effectiveness of traffic law enforcement and activities supporting traffic discipline among road users for local community contexts in order to sustainably reduce road traffic accidents.
