Abstract

Concerto for orchestra emerged in the early twentieth-century. Unlike concerto, the work is not written for a particular soloist and an orchestra but for individual instruments or sections in the orchestra. The similarity in the instrumental and formal treatments could also be seen in concerto grosso from the Baroque era. Each composer has different techniques in writing the concerto for orchestra. Most prefer to write virtuosic instrumental techniques using complex melody, harmony, rhythms, and meters associated with the twentieth-century music practice.
