Dynamics of Jazz music in Thai culture

Abstract

This research study about the dynamics of Jazz music in Thai culture, using qualitative research methods. The objective is to study the development and dynamics of jazz music in Thai culture. The results revealed that the dynamics of jazz in Thailand occur in two phases. Phase one were diffusion, acceptance and eclecticism. There are personal factors in government agencies, including the government public relations department and Royal Thai army music division those were a major driving with support from the government to serve as entertainment in the state of war. The last factor is the favor in jazz music of King Rama IX, which resulted in the transmission of jazz music to some Thai people. Phrase two were development and driving, there are individual factors in government agencies, private groups, and higher education institutions that drive jazz music. Undergraduate jazz courses are offered at various universities including Mahidol University, Silpakorn University, Rangsit University, Burapha University and Songkhla Rajabhat University, etc., which have circulated activities such as Jazz competition, Jazz music conference and Jazz music camp for interested people.
