ORIENTAL FLOWER FOR BIG BAND

Abstract

The purpose of this creative research was to compose a new jazz composition, Oriental Flowers for Big Band, and to disseminate the composition nationally and internationally.

The melody of the Thai traditional song, Kham Wan, was modified to create the main theme in Oriental Flowers for Big Band. The main theme was also used to develop other parts of the theme in this composition. The overall structure of the piece came from the visual concept of a flower. The main theme was placed in the middle section of the song comparable to the pollen in the middle of a flower. Then, the sub themes comparable to corollas surrounding the pollen were composed and inserted throughout the song from the beginning to the ending parts of the song. The harmony concept at the beginning and ending part came from the relationship of 4-5 intervals with a bass note to create various chords depending on the suitability and colors of the chords in the overall section. The harmony in the middle section embraced a V-I relationship concept with other elements to emphasize the sound of tonic chords to make them sound clearer than other parts of the song.
