FELIX SALZER’S METHOD ANALYSIS OF TOCCATA IN POUR LE PIANO BY CLAUDE DEBUSSY

Abstract

This research article is an analysis of Toccata songs in the Pour le Piano collection, authored by Claude Debussy. The researcher employed Felix Salzer's analytical method to describe the structure of different levels, focusing on the basic structure to the intermediate structure as well as important details. The analysis showed that the basic structure of the song has C# as the Tone Center. The C# note is expanded into the bass melody C#-C-C#. The harmonic structure is the C#m-C-C# chord, based on the contrapuntal structure. The Outer form is a three-part piece of music with sub-forms hidden within with a rondo in seven sections. After considering the note reduction, it was revealed that Debussy used various materials, such as modes of Lydian and Mixolydian. Whole-tone, Quartal chords and Tri-tone, etc., to create new accents for the Toccata song. in the midst of a new musical accent, the composer hid the middle structure of the song, which retained the form of traditional harmonics ingeniously.
