Abstract

This article presents the creative results of Sud-Sanguan: Sam So, which is part of a research project in creative Thai musical arts (duriyangkasilpa). The aim of the study is to showcase the process and outcome of the composition, developed through qualitative research methodology by analyzing data from documentary sources and interviews with Thai music experts. The findings were synthesized into a conceptual framework that informed the creation of the work. The composition is based on the principal melody of Sud-Sanguan Sam Chan, structured in six rhythmic cycles using the Prop Kai rhythmic pattern, and employs two pentacentric scales: Do-Re-Mi–Sol–La and Fa–Sol–La–Do–Re, producing a Mon-influenced tonality with an overall mood that is calm, gentle, and serene. The melodic harmonization follows the Thangoad style, emphasizing smooth interweaving of lines. The creative concepts guiding the work include (1) balance, (2) connection and completeness, (3) development and variety, and (4) a graceful melodic conclusion. The creative process involved four stages: planning and structural design, melodic and harmonic composition, rehearsal and revision, and ultimately, performance and dissemination.
