Abstract

The Chap Lek, which are small cymbals, is a rhythmic instrument that belongs to the percussion family of Thai classical music. The unique playing techniques often emphasis sub-beats, adding texture and motion to the rhythmic structure of Thai classical music. This article aims to address the role and performance practice, as well as how to play Chap Lek in the context of Thai classical music. The study highlights the essential role of the Chap Lek in generating rhythms, particularly through the making of syncopation within the texture of the ensemble. Commonly recognised playing sounds include ‘Chae’, ‘Wab’, ‘Jae’ and ‘kri’. The performance practice approach of the Chap Lek depends largely on tempo, rhythmic cycle, and melodic form, with omission and repetition forming the basis for creating diverse rhythmic patterns. The article proposes that closer attention should be given to the ‘Chap Lek Rhythm’ as a rhythmic element in Thai music, on an equal footing with the rhythms of the Ching and the drums in the system of Thai music analysis, encouraging new questions and perspectives for future analysis and creative practice.
