THE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT THAI CLASSICAL PERFORMANCE COSTUME

Abstract

This resarch aims to examine the styles and development of The lightweight Thai Classical Performance Costume, focusing on the case of Tibet Khrueang Lakorn, which has produced and provided such costumes since 2018. The research this research is qualitative study, utilizing in-depth interviews with the proprietor, along with documentary review and photographic data collection.

The results found that Tibet Khrueang Lakorn began experimenting with the design and construction of court costumes in 2018. Mr. Tibet Kumnu, the proprietor, developed a strong interest in court-style attire and aspired to establish his own dance troupe. To achieve this, he sought to create distinctive costume designs that would differ from those of other Thai traditional costume rental shop. While adhering to the structural principles of court costumes as prescribed by The Fine Arts Department, he introduced modifications in form, proportion, and weight reduction, as well as incorporated commercially available materials. These adaptations were undertaken without compromising the aesthetic integrity of Thai Classical Performance Costume. The newly developed costume components created by Tibet Khrueang Lakorn include textile elements such as shoulder decoration, inner and outer clothes for male and female, and trouser.
