The purposes of this research were 1) to test the efficiency of communicative approach teaching for TOEIC listening test, 2) to compare students’ English listening ability before and after using communicative approach teaching and 3) to study students’ opinions toward the teaching materials and methods by using communicative approach teaching. The 60 samples were randomly selected from the 1st year students in faculty of Engineering who enrolled in English for Communication 1 (ENL101) course in 2013 academic year. The research instrument consisted of 1) 80 items of pre-test and post test for 4 types of exercises 2) 100 items of pre-test and post test for TOEIC proficiency test on listening skill 3) the questionnaire surveyed about the students’ opinions toward the teaching materials and methods. The t-test was used to analyze the data in order to access the students’ English listening ability before and after using communicative approach teaching for TOEIC Listening Test. In addition, the mean and standard deviation were used to evaluate the students’ opinions toward the teaching materials and methods. The results of the study were the efficiency in English teaching by using communicative approach was able to uplift 1st year engineering students’ proficiency in TOEIC listening skill test taking. The test results which compare the efficiency in English teaching by using communicative approach found that after using communicative approach teaching, the students’ post-test score categorized by 4 types of exercises were higher than the students’ pre-test score which had statistically significant difference at 0.05 level. In addition, the students’ level of satisfaction toward the teaching materials and methods by using communicative approach teaching was at very high level (0.90).
