The Effect of Total Physical Response Method on English Listening Ability of Prathomsuksa 6 Students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study and compare listening ability of Prathomsuksa 6 students before and after learning through the Total Physical Response method (TPR) and to study attitude towards learning English through TPR of Prathomsuksa 6 students. The sample consisted of 30 Prathomsuksa 6 students at the Municipal Schools group, Nongkhai Province in the first semester of the academic year 2019. They were selected through the cluster random sampling method. The research design employed was a one-group pretest-posttest. The research instruments included 12 lesson plans, an English listening ability test and a students’ attitude questionnaire. The experiment lasted twelve weeks, 2 hours a week, or 24 hours altogether. The descriptive statistical methods and the dependent sample T-Test were used for the data analysis. The findings of this research were as follows.


  1. The students’ pretest and posttest mean scores of listening ability were 11.00 and 55.00 percent and 17.53 and 87.65 percent respectively. The students’ listening ability after the experiment was significantly higher than theie listening ability before the instruction and it was higher than the set standard by 70 percent.

  2. The students’ attitude towards learning English listening through the TPR was at a very good level.
