Abstract

The purpose of thesis have three objectives: (1) to study of the meaning kind and character of the Nibbana in Theravada Buddhism (2) to analytical study of the significance and development of Nibbana in Buddhist concept (3) to study of the influence of a belief of the Nibbana affect Thai society. This study is a documentary research.

             It could be concluded from the study that: The Nibbana in Theravada Buddhism, Nibbana is reality which changes the way insight or heightens consciousness. Character of Nibbana is calmness from Kilesa and Tanha [defilements and craning]. The Nibbana it is states the permanent happiness and not-self. The space–state of Nibbana in the principal of Theravada is the empty from defilement [kilesa] carve ‘Tanha’ that are the holders ‘this is’ ‘I’ This is my one. It is called shows that Nibbana is Anatta because it is a state or event of liberation or a metaphysical state. So the Nibbana in Theravada Buddhism, 2 types (1) Nibbana with the substratum of life remaining (2) Nibbana without any substratum of life remaining (extinction of the defilements, extinction of the Aggregates)

             The Synonyms of Nibbana in Theravada Buddhism such as the states of Unconditioned, the cessation of suffering ; extinction of suffering liberation, seclusion from the essentials of existence, i.e. Nibbana, liberation through voidness ; void liberation, liberation through signlessness ; signless liberation, liberation through disposition lessness ; desireless liberation etc.

             The doctrine which teaches for Attaining Nibbana ; the Noble Eightfold Paths. “The Freedom of Mind” means the identical truth refers to the principle of nature of mind releasing from defilements etc. the state of consciousness Ariyapuggala [the noble individual]: Stream-Enterer, Once-Returner, Non-Returner, the Worthy One.

The thought of the influence of Nibbana or Nirvana (Extinction) in Thai society. By a study It found that the Group of people believe that: the Nirvana still is still being, the Nirvana separated from our world and setting far away from our world. It is a voiding of consciousness which is the haven place. This is the Buddhist original confidence of the first Group. The second group of the people believe that: Nirvana (Extinction) is the extinction of passion and desire and is the extinction of Aggregates It is the mind of a (Arahanta) Holy One who get a (Arahanta) Holy one will have no birth at all. This faith is the influence of Theravada section in Buddhism. The third group has a faith that: Nirvana (Extinction) is the gem town, haven, purified Place. It is the Resident of (Arahanta) Holy one eternally. This confidence depend on the influence of Mahayana section in Buddhism.
