Isan Rak Tin Model Community : Process of Perceiving Isan People of Na Ruam Muang Community Chumphae to Elevate the Local Identity

Abstract

             This study aims: 1) to investigate the historical background, spatial context, and potential of the Na-ruam community Muang Chumphae in Khon Kaen Province; 2) to examine the participatory process of fostering a sense of Isan identity within the community; and 3) to analyze the development of local identity that enables the community to serve as a model for Isan people who cherish their homeland. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative research through content analysis of documents and previous studies, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with participatory action research (PAR) conducted in the Na-ruam community, Muang Chum Phae District, Khon Kaen Province. The target group consisted of 40 purposively selected participants. Data collected from interviews and relevant documents were analyzed using content analysis.
             The findings are as follows:
             1. The historical background, spatial context, and potential of the Na-ruam community Muang Chumphae demonstrate its capacity to become a strong and cohesive community. Contributing factors include continuous learning and understanding within the community, active participation in communal activities, and strong leadership, all of which collectively support community resilience.
             2. The participatory process of fostering Isan identity reflects a communal consciousness that has been cultivated over time. This process entails joint efforts toward shared objectives, including securing permanent housing, attaining livelihood stability, and collectively contributing resources to purchase the “Na-ruam” land. This shared ownership provides access to food and farmland, supports community-based enterprises, encourages leadership development, and engages youth in learning processes. These practices reinforce attachment to the homeland and promote sustainable community development.
             3. The strengthening of local identity, enabling the community to serve as a model for Isan people who value their homeland, is achieved through the consolidation of distinctive cultural traits established by systematic social organization, rules, and regulations. Community members understand their respective roles, fostering pride, ownership, and stewardship of the community. This shared identity nurtures a sense of belonging and loyalty to the homeland, which is transmitted to future generations.
