This research has objectives: 1) to study the concept of fear; 2) to study fear in Theravada Buddhist philosophy; and 3) to analyze the concept of fear in Theravada Buddhist philosophy. A qualitative research method was used, collecting data from documents, texts, the Tripitaka, and related primary and secondary research. The information presented in a descriptive analytical writing format.
The results of research found that:
1. Concepts: It was found that concepts are images or mental constructs representing various different things with shared characteristics. They are conceptual frameworks used to categorize and explain various phenomena defined by humans.
2. Fear in Theravāda Buddhist Philosophy found that fear was classified into two types: 1) external fear (lokiya-bhāya), referring to dangers arising from external conditions, such as fear of death, fear of natural disasters, and fear of change; and 2) internal fear (lokuttara-bhāya), which arose from inner mental states rooted in defilements (kilesa) and ignorance (avijjā).
3. In Theravada Buddhist philosophy, the concept of fear (bhaya) is viewed not merely as a negative emotion or instinctive reaction to danger, but as a conceptual construct fabricated by the mind under the conditions of ignorance (avijjā) and craving (taṇhā), key components in the cycle of suffering according to the Four Noble Truths. Therefore, fear in Buddhist philosophy is a mental phenomenon that profoundly influences perception, interpretation, and action. Managing fear is not about suppression or avoidance, but rather about mindful confrontation and skillful reflection (yonisomanasikāra), which is deep and insightful consideration to understand its true nature. Because fear is a conditioned phenomenon, it is subject to the Three Characteristics (impermanence, suffering, and non-self): arising, existing, and changing.
