CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE: 15 MARCH 2024

A lot of current discussion of food systems is often framed within the context of globalization, with a specific focus on the almost hegemonic power of transnational food complexes. However, recent developments in food systems across the Global South paint a more nuanced picture, one that emphasizes the multi-scalar nature of these systems. This workshop seeks to provide a ground-level examination of the changes occurring in local food systems throughout Asia, through the lens of diets. In this dialogue about the synergy between diets and local food systems, we seek to gain insights into how local/regional actors and locations participate in food production, distribution, and consumption.

We invite submissions of diverse methodological approaches on various themes, including 1) urban foodways; 2) knowledge and narratives about diets; and 3) alternative food network practices. We particularly welcome original contributions and previously unpublished submissions that speak to one or more of those categories. However, we are open to a wider array of themes in the workshop, encompassing research that is historical, contemporary or future-facing.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Foodways of the urban poor
  • Gender and racial inequalities in urban foodways
  • Transformation, continuity, and production of knowledge of diets
  • Minority/Peripherical narratives of diets
  • Preservation of locality and seasonality in local food markets
  • Smallholders and local food markets.

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

Paper proposals should include a title, an abstract (300 words maximum), and a brief personal biography (about 150 words) for submission by 15 March 2024. Please also include a statement confirming that your proposed paper has not been published or committed elsewhere, and that you are willing to revise the version of your paper presented at the workshop for potential inclusion in an edited volume.

Proposals are to be submitted to [email protected] using the template. Authors of selected proposals can expect to be notified by mid-April 2024. Workshop presenters will be required to submit short draft papers (3,000-4,000 words) by 15 August 2024. These papers will be circulated to fellow panelists and discussants in advance of the workshop and need not be fully polished. Indeed, we expect that presenters will be open to feedback from fellow participants and discussion at the workshop in order to revise and expand their draft papers for publication.

This workshop will be conducted in person and online. The Asia Research Institute will provide overseas participants with full or partial airfare funding as well as three nights of accommodation in Singapore. Please indicate in the proposal form if you require funding support.
