AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACTS OF MONASTIC REFORM INITIATIVES IN THE MODERN ERA ON PUBLIC WELFARE

Abstract

This academic article was composed to analyze the impacts of the modern reform initiatives of Thailand’s monastic system on public welfare activities. The scope of the study includes the revision of monastic education curricula, promotion of good governance, and enhancement of monks' management and communication skills. These improvements aim to expand monks' roles in societal contributions by integrating moral principles with public welfare efforts. The findings indicate that these reforms actively enable monks to enhance public well-being, offer psychological counseling, and build collaborative networks with governmental, private, and civil society sectors, alongside environmental conservation. Systematic application of the Four Brahmaviharas and Yonisomanasikara principles significantly alleviates public suffering and strengthens community resilience. Nevertheless, the primary challenge of the reforms lies in maintaining public faith amidst rapidly disseminating digital media content. Hence, monks must acquire technological and communication proficiency to appropriately adapt while preserving the core identity of Buddhism.
