Abstract

Objectives of this research article were: 1. to study the behavior of convicted prisoners at Bangkok Remand Prison; 2. to develop a behavioral change process through the Sakkasamadhi Course; and 3. to evaluate the process. A qualitative methodology was employed with 24 key informants, comprising 10 correctional officers, 4 instructors from the Institute of Mental Power, and 10 convicted prisoners, spanning diverse offense types and ages 36–80. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and focus group discussions, and validated through triangulation.

Findings revealed that 1. convicted prisoners exhibited behavioral problems in four dimensions—self-regulation, emotional and mental health, social relationships, and attitudes toward rules—which varied by offense type, along with two types of motivation for course participation: extrinsic motivation oriented toward sentence-reduction benefits, and intrinsic motivation oriented toward genuine self-change; 2. the behavioral change process integrated Mental Power philosophy with the Threefold Training, which develops the individual dimension, and the Four Brahmaviharas, which develop the social relationship dimension, driven by three mechanisms: emotional regulation, cognitive restructuring, and identity reconstruction; and 3. evaluation revealed three phases of change, with a critical point at day 40 requiring a three-layer support network, culminating at day 90 in emerging identity transformation alongside four-dimensional well-being.
