USING COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE ENGLISH LISTENING-SPEAKING ABILITIES AND GRAMMATICAL KNOWLEDGE AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Abstract

The purposes of this study were 1) to study listening-speaking abilities of undergraduate students after they were taught through communicative language teaching activities, and 2) to compare grammatical knowledge of undergraduate students before and after they were taught through communicative language teaching activities. The target group was 36 undergraduate students taking the Developmental English course (001112) in the second semester of the academic year 2015 at University of Phayao. The research instruments consisted of 7 lesson plans using communicative language teaching activities, the listening-speaking abilities assessment form and the grammatical knowledge test. The data obtained were analyzed for the mean, standard deviation and percentage. The findings were as follows:
1. After the students were taught through the communicative language teaching activities, their English listening-speaking abilities passed the preset criterion, at a good level.
2. After the students were taught through the communicative language teaching activities, their grammatical knowledge increased.
