A DECADE OF CHINESE ROMANTIC NOVELS: A CASE STUDY OF JAMSAI PUBLISHING’S MAKKWARAK NOVELS PUBLISHED IN 2551-2560 B.E. WITH THAI SOCIETY

Abstract
The research aimed to study the development of Jamsai Publishing’s Makkwarak novels that were published and sold between B.E. 2551 and B.E. 2560, factors influencing the novels’ popularity as well as social values and benefits of the novels. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were applied in the research. The results were obtained from the data analysis of the names of the novels, the summary of online questionnaire responses of 200 readers of Chinese novels on Facebook, and the interview with Ms. Piyarat Pinijprapa, head editor of Jamsai Publishing.
Makkwarak novels have been popular among readers since they were officially published and have played a major role in popularizing romantic Chinese novels in Thai society. The results show that the lengths of Makkwarak novels have changed over time. The publisher focused on single novels in the beginning but later changed their focus to novel series. They chose original Chinese novel series or put Chinese single novels into series and named the novel series by themselves or translated the names of the novel series using beautiful language to attract readers. Moreover, factors influencing Makkwarak novels’ popularity consisted of readers’ backgrounds and ages, the publisher’s direction and work quality, reviews, and book-to-TV adaptations. The popularity of the novels encouraged readers’ interest in Chinese history, culture and language learning and boosted reading habits in Thai society.
