AN ANALYSIS OF THAI COMPLEX SENTENCES IN TEXTBOOKS FOR PRATHOM 4-6 STUDENTS

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze complex sentences in Thai language for Prathom 4-6 students that appeared in the textbooks of fundamental courses in the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E.2551. In this research, 64 textbooks published by the Office of the Welfare Promotion Commission for Teachers and Education Personnel (OTEP) between 2010 and 2016 were studied, including 7 learning areas: Thai Language, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Religion and Culture, Health and Physical Education, Arts, Occupations and Technology, and Foreign Languages.
To analyze the complex sentences, Vichin Panupongetal’s complex-sentence concepts (2009) were applied. The sentences were categorized according to structures by considering the features of sentence components and the connection between dependent clause and independent clause to create longer sentences.The research results showed that there were 1,054 complex sentences appeared in the textbooks of the fundamental courses in the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E.2551, and these complex sentences could be divided into 3 types: 473 complex sentences with adjective clauses (44.88%), 433 complex sentences with adverbial clauses (41.08%), and 148 complex sentences with noun clauses (14.04%).
