CULTURE SURVEILLANCE FOR CREATION OF MUSIC STUDIES OF WIND BAND FROM LANNA MUSIC

Abstract

This research aimed to study appropriate rhythm of Lanna folk songs to create the practice song for wind band in Chiang Rai Province, and to create the practice song for woodwind band from the melody of Lanna folk songs. The informants were a Lanna folk song teacher, a conductor, and students in a woodwind band. Observation form and in-depth interview, questionaire, and practice song for the woodwind band were used as the research tools.

            Findings illustrated that the selection of the song for the practice song for the wind band was considered from the melody. It was the melody that was taught by all Lanna folk song teachers which was known to the students. Furthermore, the selection depended on the moderate melodic motion; the disjunct wide range was difficult to the students to play. Consequently, eight melodies were selected as the most appropriate melody for creating the practice song for the wind band, which were Long Mae Ping, Rue Si Long Tham, Prasat Wai, Pum Peng, Sroi Wiang Ping, Rabam Kai Jae, Fon Saw Mai, and Moo Hao Jao Neua. The practice song for the wind band that was the “Lanna Reflection” was the arrangement of the harmonic of Lanna folk song as the chorale for the band, consisting of eight songs. The concept based in the tonality that highlighted on the central of tone while the music texture was heterophony. The rhythm was 4/4 and the clefs used were B-flat major, F major, E-flat major, C Aeolian mode, and Mixolydian mode. Countermelody, melodic sequence, melodic Variation, imitation, syncopation, contrary motion and Klangfarbenmelodie were also applied.
