SPEECH ACTS OF THE LULLABIES IN CHIANG MAI PROVINCE

Abstract
This paper aims to study Speech Acts of the Lullabies in Chiang Mai Province. The data in this study were collected from 25 Northern Thai lullabies which published by Social Research Institute Chiangmai University. It was found that the 25 collected lullabies contained 191 utterances. The 25 Northern Thai lullabies used in the study can be divided in to 5 types of speech acts, as classified by Yule (1996). These are directives, commissives, expressives, representatives and declarations. The speech acts found most were directives, followed by representatives and the one found least was declarations.
