GUIDELINES FOR SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AT BAN PA WAI SCHOOL IN TAT THONG SUBDISTRICT, SI THAT DISTRICT, UDON THANI PROVINCE

Abstract

The purposes of this study were 1) to study knowledge of the solid waste management of the students at Ban Pa Wai School, 2) to investigate the behaviors of the solid waste management of the students at Ban Pa Wai School, and 3) to propose the guidelines for the solid waste management for the students at Ban Pa Wai School, Tat Thong subdistrict, Sri That district, Udon Thani Province. The target group consisted of 53 students who were studying at Prathomsuksa 1-6 levels, five administrators and teachers at Ban Pa Wai School. The research instruments used for collecting the data a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview form. The obtained data were statistically analyzed and interpreted by percentage, mean, and frequency.

The results of the study revealed that the target group had knowledge of the solid waste management at the highest level (83.02%). Moreover, it was found that more than 80% of the target group could answer the question correctly as considered each item whereas the target group had the least knowledge of the general waste about the fact that it should be disposed by burning (13.21%). In the view of the behaviors, the target group had the mean score at a high level ( = 3.95). Considering each item and behavior, it was found that the target group had the lowest mean score on the fact that the students used to dispose the waste such as plastic bags and dried branches and leaves by burning ( = 1.56).The guidelines for the solid waste management in the school were proposed as follows: 1) Instill conscience in the students to manage the solid waste accurately, and promote the participatory activities of the solid waste management consecutively, 2) Develop the learning unit about the solid waste management through employing the principle of 3Rs, 3) Provide the particular area with the roof for sorting the solid waste, and construct the non-smoke waste incinerator, 4) Consecutively coach the personnel and students about the solid waste management in the school annually, 5) Promote and support the existing projects in the school consecutively and sustainably for practically applying in the school and the community, 6) Collaborate with the community or relevant agencies, and 7) Promote the research study about the solid waste management in the school and the community.
