From In the Name of the Dragon to In Family We Trust: Cultural Identity Presentation of Chinese Diaspora in Thai Television Dramas

Abstract
The migration of Chinese diaspora to Thailand has brought their social and cultural identities into Thai society. The “Chineseness” infused with “Thainess” has been portrayed through Thai television dramas. This research focuses on the comparative analysis of Chinese identities appeared in Thai Television dramas in six aspects. In the Name of the Dragon (1992) and In Family We Trust (2018) were selected to be studied the convention and invention of Chinese diaspora identities. The study found that the convention of Chinese diaspora identities has the following characteristics: living in extended families with three generations of Chinese, doing family business, prioritizing sons more than daughters, and respecting to Thailand as a benefactor.The invention of cultural identities was presented in the aspects of self-reliance, negotiation of women’s roles and reduction of the sign of Chineseness in physical elements. The presentation of Chinese diaspora in Thai television dramas reflects the dynamics of cultural identities that were integrated into the current social context.
