Target Language Structures and Usages: The Mistranslation of Passive Constructions from English into Thai

Abstract
This research aimed to analyze translation errors in rendering passive constructions from English into Thai by examining target language structures and usages. The sample consisted of 230 English majors at Burapha University. A translation test was used to collect the data. The results revealed that the analysis of target language structures and usages uncovered seven patterns of translation errors as follows: 1) passivity meanings not translated, 2) passive constructions translated into active constructions, 3) passive constructions translated into noun clauses, 4) passive constructions translated into noun phrases, 5) mistranslation of main verbs, 6) passivity meanings translated into modality meanings, and 7) inappropriate or unnatural target language.
