Online News Editor and Computer Crime Law in Thailand

This research entitled “Online News Editor and Computer Crime Law in Thailand” aimed to investigate the case study of suing online news editors after the enforcement of Computer Crime Act B.E. 2550 (2007) to indicate the news report within the scope of offences under Computer Crime Act relating to mass media. This study used qualitative research and in-depth interview as methodology. The results of this study could be summarized into three main issues. Firstly, for the role of online news reporting, news agencies had different working positions. Secondly, online news editors who had been accused of defendants in the cases under Computer Crime Act B.E. 2550 included Facebook page administrators, journalists, online editors, web hosting providers, and webmasters. Online news editors were sued by plaintiffs including individuals, companies, government agencies, and even news agencies. The charges included defamation, security-related offence, publishing and forwarding illegal messages, willful support for publishing illegal messages. Thirdly, for the perspective of Computer Crime Act (No. 2) B.E. 2560 (2017), despite removal of defamation issue, new charges will be added as a tool to punish the offender expressing illegal comment or publishing illegal information to the public via online.
