Narrative in Film Directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit

Abstract

        This research aims to analyze the narrative method and sort out the genres of films directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit. In addition, it is a qualitative research by means of studying the textual analysis of 6 feature films, including 36; Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy; The Master; Freelance the Movie; Die Tomorrow; and Girl’s Don’t Cry.

        For the research results, it was found that the aforementioned films have the common charac- teristics as follows: (1) Core story relates to searching; (2) Most of the plot consists of a three-act structure (3) Most of the characters are rounded or well-rounded; (4) In terms of conflict, inner conflict is found in all films; (5) In terms of setting, most of the scenes are artificial scenes, while the places are cities based on the period of the plot; (6) In terms of narrator, 2 major types of narrators are found, including impersonal narrator and first-person narrator

        In term of the film genres, the most common genres are comedy, art film, and documentary. It is observed that one film can share some characteristics of each genre. The comedy and art film appear these shared characteristics mostly. There is also a cross between genres such as a non-fiction film featuring a fiction story.
