The Philosophy of Humanism in the Films of Akira Kurosawa

The objectives of this research were to explore the concept of humanism expressed in the films of Akira Kurosawa and to gain a deeper understanding of how the concept of humanism was transmittedthroughthecinematictacticsbyAkiraKurosawa. Theoreticalconceptswerebased on the concept of Humanism , the concept of Semiotic and cinematic code. Textual analysis was used as the research methodology. The films of Akira Kurosawa in this study collect data from 27 films. The results found that:
Humanistic ideas expressed by Akira Kurosawa’s films consist of 1)helping other people;2) people should do things for the common welfare;3)have faith in humanity;4)to be human is more valuable than anything else;5)fellow humans are our siblings and friends;6)you should trust in other people;7)people can determine their own destinies; and8)the real value of being human does not come from material happiness.
In his films, Akira Kurosawa employs 6 cinematographic techniques to transmit messages about humanism:1) Montage;2)lighting;3)symbolism using natural phenomena;4)camera angles;5) analogies; and 6)contrasting opposites. The research findings of cinematographic techniques can use as approach for the construction of meaning in film based on Humanism
