Analysis of Crime News Coverage of Thai Daily Newspapers Case Study: Discourse of the Acquitted

The objectives of the research are to study factors affecting news coverage on the acquitted of Thai daily newspapers and to analyze such coverage, using qualitative research methodology. And The content analysis study on the stories about the acquitted as presented in two types of newspapers: quantitatively-oriented and qualitatively-oriented. The study is based on in-depth interviews of newspaper professionals and people concerned.
The findings of the study show that the factors affecting news coverage of the acquitted by Thai daily newspapers are 1) organizational factors covering the nature or type of organizational concerned, 2)news factors covering selection of stories, importance, and newsworthiness, and 3) personal factors covering the selection of stories based on certain ideology, skills and belief. In addition, economic pressure and expectations of the readers still have an influence on the news coverage on the acquitted by the newspapers media.
An analysis of the news coverage finds that the newspaper media contributes to the creation of discourse of the acquitted through a paradigm of narratives. This provides is the basis in the reporting of the mass media language, thus demonstrating the power of discourse that reflects the idea, belief and value of people in the society.
