Jean-Paul Sartre’s Existentialism in Hollywood Movies

Abstract

        The objectives of “Existentialism’s Jean Paul Sartre in Hollywood Movies: 2000 - 2020” was to study the strategic model of narrative and philosophical concepts in Hollywood movies 2000 - 2020. This research was Qualitative Research analyzed by Textual Analysis. Major concepts in the study were Film Narration and Existentialism’s Jean Paul Sartre. The researched movies were five Hollywood movies 2000 - 2020: Million Dollar Baby (2004), Into the Wild (2007), An Education (2009), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and Lady Bird (2017)

        The findings revealed that Hollywood movies often used narration or storytelling methods as follows: 1) According to the plot, most movies use expositions to expose the audience to the character and the situation in which they are supported, which leads to conflicts in which the characters must make decisions. The character's decision-making is represented by rising action, which is dependent on their perceptions or ambitions. The climax occurs when the main character is disappointed by his or her objectives, resulting in drowning and suffering. Falling Action is when the main character changes itself again. Endings are frequently left open-ended so that viewers can continue to criticize further. 2) According to the theme, it often presents an existential concept. 3) According to the character, the main characters are multidimensional with life transitions. 4) According to the conflict, the majority of movies tend to be focused on the conflict that occur between the characters. 5) According to the setting, the importance of the characters' living scenes and the context that conflicts with the character is focused. 6) According to the point of view, it often presents the character from the eyes of the first-person perspective.7) According to the symbol, it is presented through both visual and audio symbols.

        In conclusion, the most existentialism in Hollywood Movies composed of these factors: 1) Human and Freedom as represented via all researched movies. 2) Consciousness And Non – being as represented via Million Dollar Baby, An Education Inside, Llewyn Davis, and Lady Bird 3) Being-for-itself as represented via Into the Wild, An Education, Inside Llewyn Davis, Lady Bird 4) God is dead as represented via Million Dollar Baby and Lady bird.
