An Analysis of Film Language of Popular Film Clips in YouTube

Abstract

        This research is a qualitative research.  Textual analysis is the main method used for analyzing.  The objective of this research is to analyze film language of 10 popular film clips in YouTube.  The 10 clips include  1) Another Day of Sun – La La Land Opening Scene   2) The first 9 minutes of 1917   3) The Godfather (3/9) Movie Clip – Killing Sollozzo and McCluskey   4) The Godfather Part II (5/8) Movie Clip – Sicilian Revenge   5) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – The Final Duel   6) Heat Shootout Scene   7) Inception – Ending   8) La La Land –A Lovely Night Scene   9) La La Land (2016 Movie) Official Clip “City of Stars”  และ   10) You Can’t Handle the Truth – A Few Good Men (7/8) Movie Clip.  Formalism theory is the theoretical framework of this study.

        The research findings are as follows: 1) extreme long shots, long shots, medium shots, close up shots and extreme close up shots are main image sizes found in the clips;  2) high angle shots and low angle shots are found in the clips;  3) camera movement plays important role in Another Day of Sun – La La Land Opening Scene, the first 9 minutes of  1917 and La La Land – A Lovely Night Scene;   4) mise – en – scene is utilized in clips from La La Land (A Lovely Night and City of Stars), in 1917 and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly;  5) high key and low key lighting are found in those clips;  6) Colour communicate through costumes, automobiles and lighting;  7) sound used in the clips include songs, music score and spoken language;  8) the two main editing are editing for narrative purpose and editing for emotional purpose.  It can be concluded that the film language found in all film clips are based on formalism theory.
