The Character Design and Storytelling in Television Drama: A Case Study of the Course Entitled Creative Design Project and Criticism, Bachelor of Communication Arts Program in Mass Communication, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University

Abstract

        The qualitative research entitled “the Character Design and Storytelling in Television Drama: A Case Study of the Course Entitled Creative Design Project and Criticism, Bachelor of Communication Arts Program in Mass Communication, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University” aimed to study the storytelling and character design in the television drama or students from the course entitled Creative Design Project and Criticism in the first semester, academic year 2020. The 3 television drama series were studied including Before The last song, Thyme & New | Turn Back Time and Ruean Maya | The Series. The research tools included the content analysis and in-depth interview with the television drama directors and script writers.

        The results revealed as follows. The storytelling of the 3 television drama series was under the theme of various forms of love and relationship in a family, gender-neutral relationship and a greed leading to the scramble for the loved ones and wealth.  The character design of the 3 television drama series was based on script writer’s background and interest together with researching for information through intimates and social issues as well as searching through the internet. This enabled students who created the production to interpret the actions of each character and understand the cause of the situation in the series. Finally, they could develop complete understanding of content they would like to convey.
