Reflection on Society Presented in Black Mirror Series And “The Writer” Screenplay

Abstract

        The objectives of “Reflection on Society Presented in Black Mirror Series” were to 1) analyze the social reflection that appeared in the Black Mirror series and 2) analyze the film language in the Black Mirror series by using qualitative research. Through the textual analysis, with the main concepts in the study as follows: 1 Film and social reflection 2 Film narrative structures 3 Film languages ​​4 Semiotics. The series used in the study consisted of 5 episodes of the Black Mirror series: 1. Fifteen Million Merits (2011), 2. Nosedive (2016), 3. San Junipero (2016), 4. Arkangel (2017) and 5. Black Museum (2017). The study found that 1 Black Mirror series reflects social problems in 4 dimensions as follows: 1.1) Economic aspect 1.2) Political aspect 1.3) Social and 1.4) Environmental Toxic. 2 Black Mirror series were used in cinematic language in the following ways: 1.1) Stage of image. There were two main image sizes: medium shot and close-up 1.2) Camera movement to set the camera on a tripod and moving the camera horizontally (Pan) or moving the camera vertically (Tilt) 1.3) Camera angle: Use eye-level shots and high-angle shots. 1.4) Lighting in dark and light tones 1.5) Editing and sequencing techniques are used in real time in the story (Universal Time) 1.6) Scenes and locations, there is a difference in each episode. 1.7) The signs were found to be consistent with social reflection issues, and 1.8) The sounds consisted of speech, music, and sound effects.

        The research result leads to create “The Writer” screenplay which has 4 steps. 1) Setting the main theme of the story.  2) Setting the details of the main characters. 3) Writing treatment. 4) Writing screenplay.
