This research is a qualitative research, It aims to analyze the characteristics of protagonists in Martin Scorsese’s films, focusing on character study, storytelling
The research examines five films: Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), The Irishman (2019), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Findings indicate that Scorsese’s protagonists often share common characteristics, such as internal conflict, isolation, and struggles with societal expectations. Furthermore, the study reveals that the use of film language plays a crucial role in deepening character complexity and enhancing audience comprehension of their emotions and motivations.
In terms of narrative structure, Scorsese employs varied opening techniques. Films such as Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), and The Irishman (2019) begin with events from the middle or end of the story before unfolding their origins, creating intrigue and capturing audience interest from the outset. In contrast, Taxi Driver (1976) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) adopt a linear storytelling approach, progressing chronologically from beginning to end.
