Developing Communication Skills Through Role Playing for Medical Students, Siam University

Abstract

The communication of medical students who will become doctors in the future is extremely important. Especially, in the communication of the doctor with the patient, the patient's relative, and the people around them. Doctor should be trained to be a good communicator because it affects the diagnosis and cooperation with the patient. Therefore, to develop communication skill of medical students needs to use role playing, which is a science of performing arts communication to create simulations as a result if providing medical students who will be doctors in the future have good communication skills.

The objective of this paper is to present developing communication skills through role playing for medical students, Siam University. There were three steps: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production. In the Pre-Production part, the author created the topic of patient-derived problems and doctor-derived

problems. Then, the medical students determined the situation for themselves under the given topics. The author made a time agreement with students and actors on performances and about the emotional colors with the actors. In the Production part, the medical students participated in the role play individually. And in the Post-Production part is Evaluations. From the actor’s evaluation of the communication of medical students. It was found that medical students were able to communicate that they had knowledge of basic patient information at a high level (X = 4.157). Also, the medical student’s evaluation on role-playing to develop communication skills for medical students was that the appropriateness of the topics assigned by the author for role-playing was at a high level (X = 4.471)
