The Gender Roles of Thai Country

Abstract

Thai country music is the genre of Music that Thai people have listened to for a long time. It provides entertainment and reflects the conceptions, beliefs, and cultures of the people in each generation. Nowadays, Thai country music is trendy.

The objective of the study was to examine the gender role of Thai country music. The study was qualitative research focused on analyzing the lyrics of Thai country music through sexuality, role theory, representation, and social construction of reality. The quantitative data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis and displayed the results about the gender role of Thai country music by a coding sheet. The results of this study show that the relationship between men and women reflects their gender roles. The third form is gender relations between men and women, family relationships, and LGBTQ relationships. In addition, the gender roles that appeared in current indie folk songs were found in four prominent roles: the role of a couple.
