On Her Love: Discourse analysis of Lesbian’s Love and Gender Relations

The research article aims to analyze discourses on lesbian’s love and gender relationships. The research used an analytical framework based on Michel Foucault's genealogical approach. The scope of the research focuses on Thai media texts first published between 1996 and 2020. The results show that media discourses are shaped by the power and knowledge that promote patriarchy, heterosexuality, gender binary, and homophobia. They constructed the love and gender relationships of those with the lesbian gender identity as hostile to society. It is forbidden love that is unusual, inappropriate, superficial and unrequited. At the same time, the context of the growth of the human rights movement for democracy and individualism, it has become a discourse tool for usurping power to redefine the love and gender relations of lesbian as a beautiful and fulfilling romantic love that is a natural right. Nonetheless, the inclusion into the definition of heterosexual romantic love, came back to undermine the relationship of women who love women. This tension creates another wave of discourse dynamic influenced by Queer theory. Individuals are aware of their gender-fluid and can seek space to maintain their own identity without being subject to a strict definition of lesbianism.
