BUDDHISM AND THE PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALING OF TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS: EMBRACING A MINDFUL APPROACH TO DEATH

This academic article examines the role of Buddhism in healing the minds of terminally ill patients, with an emphasis on embracing death mindfully (Mindful Death) in conjunction with modern medical care. The study reveals that medical treatment for terminally ill patients primarily offers palliative care to alleviate physical suffering but it cannot provide a complete cure. Therefore, addressing the psychological and spiritual dimensions becomes essential in order to reduce fear, hopelessness, and emotional distress. In this regard, Buddhist teachings offer principles that can ease mental suffering, such as the Four Brahmavihāras, the Seven Factors of Enlightenment (Bojjhaṅga), and mindfulness of death (Maraṇasati). These practices encourage patients to let go, accept the truth of impermanence, and maintain a calm state of mind in their final moments. At the same time, Buddhist monks play a significant role as spiritual leaders, offering guidance, rituals, and companionship that support both patients and their families. This approach reflects holistic care encompassing four dimensions: physical, mental, social, and intellectual, thereby enhancing the quality of life in the final stage. The integration of Buddhist principles with modern medicine do not only relieve physical pain but also strengthen mental resilience, foster insight into impermanence, and help patients relinquish attachments while recollecting virtues or the Triple Gem. Such spiritual healing ultimately leads to a “Good Death,” characterized by peace, mindfulness, and dignity, which is the highest goal in caring for terminally ill patients.
