Islamic funeral rituals that convey the concept of a good death

Abstract

This article presents the model of rituals that express "a good death" (Good Dying) from the perspective of Islam. It explains the connection between the belief in a good or bad death and the rituals and expressions of the bereaved towards the deceased. In the Islamic view, death is a social norm and a part of every human life, and it is not viewed as annihilation, but as a transition from this temporary world to the eternal world hereafter. The concept of a good death in Islam is primarily founded on: the demonstration of faith, which stems from accepting the afterlife and the immortality of the soul; and the demonstration of virtue, through a life well-lived and constant self-examination. Those with faith and virtue do not fear death, as it is a return to God. Islamic funeral rituals, such as washing the body (Ghusal), shrouding (Kafan), and burial, are viewed as concrete manifestations of the good death ideal. These rituals communicate good social order and regulation, emphasizing mutual support and collective societal action, and the principle of religious nature, which is a respectful return to nature, avoiding environmental destruction, and maintaining ecological balance. Treating the corpse with respect thus reflects reverence for humanity and the spirit within the body.
