Buddhist Economics: Opportunities, Obstacles and Management of the Rice Trading System of Thai Rice Exporters

Abstract
he objectives of this research were 1) to study the situation of rice trade; 2) to analyze the rice trading system; and 3) to develop a rice trading model for export according to the Buddhist economics of Thai rice exporters. It is a qualitative research in the field by in-depth interviews with 7 key informants selected by purposive sampling, and group discussions with 8 experts, the data were triangulated and described in a descriptive manner. The results of the research showed that 1) the current rice trade situation is divided into 2 main issues, namely 1.1) the drought that causes the rice farmers to grow rice to get not enough products to send to the rice buying fields and the central market. Although the price is very high, but the farmers do not have rice to deliver. Therefore, mills and entrepreneurs go out to buy rice in Uthai Thani, Chainat, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Suphan Buri, Uttaradit, Lopburi, Roi Et provinces, etc.; 1.2) the situation of COVID-19, which affects the global economy has therefore reduced foreign purchasing power and has high competition in the rice exporter market as well, including Vietnam, Myanmar, China and India, etc.; 2) the rice trading system for exports of Thai rice exporters consists of 4 components as follows: 2.1) agriculturist (farmers); 2.2) rice buying fields, the central market for buying rice and mills; 2.3) it is noteworthy that rice exporting companies, the mill and the rice exporting company are usually the same owner but he has many companies and different types of rice to export, such as parboiled rice to Africa, white rice to ASEAN countries, etc.; and 2.4) a price-fixer or foreign order taker will determine the price for purchasing rice from a Thai rice exporting company and distributing it in various countries; and 3) the rice trading pattern for export according to Buddhist economics consists of principles of self-reliance, carelessness, patience, right livelihood, assistance, sufficiency, and honesty
