Abstract

This research had three objectives: (1) to analyze the components of religious institutions according to theories in the sociology of religion, (2) to analyze the components of the Buddhist institution as presented in Buddhist scriptures, and (3) to synthesize and design the Buddhist institution as a social institution through Buddhist integration. This documentary research examined the sociology of religion of Émile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Peter L. Berger alongside the Tipiṭaka, its commentaries (Aṭṭhakathā) and sub-commentaries (Ṭīkā), and the views of Buddhist scholars. The analysis was guided by a three-dimensional framework comprising structural, ethical, and ritual dimensions. The research was conducted in three stages: (1) studying theories in the sociology of religion to synthesize components across the three dimensions, (2) studying Buddhist scriptures within the same three-dimensional framework, and (3) synthesizing both sets of components through Buddhist integration. The findings were presented through content analysis. The results revealed that the two bodies of knowledge do not conflict but rather complement each other systematically. The structural dimension indicated that institutional sustainability depends on systems and rules that are not tied to particular individuals. This is consistent with Weber’s concept of the routinization of charisma and with the Buddha’s entrusting of the Dhamma-Vinaya to serve as the Teacher in his stead. The ethical dimension indicated that the threefold training (tisikkhā) serves as a mechanism linking individual ethics with organizational ethics, consistent with Weber’s notion of religious ethics as a driving force of social structure. The ritual dimension indicated that Buddhist rituals function to consolidate collective consciousness, consistent with Durkheim’s concept of collective effervescence. This research generated new knowledge in the form of the “Five-Pillar Model of the Buddhist Institution Through Buddhist Integration,” comprising (1) the Dhamma-Vinaya as the Teacher and structural framework, (2) a system of checks and balances and personnel administration, (3) integrative ethics, (4) ritual as a spiritual, social, and communicative instrument, and (5) the temple, community, and state in the digital world. The model can serve as a policy norm for Sangha governing bodies in preserving the essence of the Dhamma while fostering transparency in contemporary Thai society.
