The Development of The Development of 6th Grade Students’ English language Speaking Skill on the Topic “We are Friends” through Role – Playing Activities

Abstract

The objectives of the present study are 1) to develop 6th grade students’ speaking skill in English language through role-playing activities in order that the students make a mean score of 70% or better and that at least 70% of the students pass the passing criterion and 2) to assess the students’ expressiveness at the passing criterion of the 3rd level of quality, basing on the 5-level rating scale.  The study employed the One-Shot Case Study procedure for the experiment.  The target group consisted of 10 grade-6 students at Siharaj-dechochai School under the Office of Secondary Education Service Area 25 during the first semester of 2020 school year.  Research instruments included 1) a learning unit using the role-playing activities with a topic of “We are Friends,” 2) 6 lesson plans using the role-playing activities for 2 instructional period each, taking 12 instructional periods to finish, 3) a practical assessment form for assessing the students’ English language speaking skill in 3 situations, with 3 aspects to each situation, i.e. correctness, fluency and action showing/tone of voice to support their speaking, using the 4-level Rubric Scoring for assessment, 4) an assessment form for assessing the students’ expressiveness basing on the 5-level rating scale on 5 aspects, i.e. suitable manners, self-confidence, speaking and language usage, creativity and interesting presentation.  The collected data were analyzed by means of arithmetic mean and percentage.

The findings show that:

1. The students as a whole made a mean score of 79.17% on practical skill in English language speaking as displayed during the role-playing activities on the topic of “We are Friends,” and 8 of the students or 80% of the group passed the criterion which is higher than the prescribed criterion of 70%;


2. Results of the assessment of the students’ expressiveness as a whole show that they made a mean score of 4.12 which is at the most suitable level and is higher than the prescribed criterion of 3rd level of quality.
