Historical Linguistics: A Case Study of Civara Colour Terms of Buddhist Monks From Sukkhothai Period to Ratthanakosin Period

The objectives of this research we: 1) aims to study the history and development of using civara colour terms in Buddhism, 2) to study the of civara colour terms of Buddhist monks in Thailand from Sukhothai period to Rattanakosin period and 3) to analyze the use of civara colour terms from Sukhothai period to Rattanakosin period that are correct according to the monks' discipline. For research method the research studied information from the Tipitaka. Bibles, commentary, textbooks, academic papers and related research reports
The research results were as follows: The concept of civara colour terms of monks in Theravada Buddhism in the time of the Buddha, it was found that the Buddha allowed 6 types of civara, namely bark cloth cotton silk Wool hemp cloth a combination of fabrics and His Highness allowed the following civara dye : the dye produced from the roots or rhizomes the dye derived from the tree except the dye is extracted from the bark the bark of the bark the dye from flowers staining only fruit and The patterns of the use of the civara colour terms of Buddhist monks in Thailand from Sukhothai period to Rattanakosin period were found that during the Sukhothai period, they did not use yellow-tones of civara, mixed with other colors. As found there are 5 colors called Benjarong color: black, white, red, green and yellow But in dyeing civara Will not be dyed completely yellow Because of wrong discipline Therefore dyeing yellow with other colors Which will not break the discipline Dyeing materials are determined according to the available environment. As for the civara in the Rattanakosin period, they used two color civara, namely monks in the Dharma Sankhavant faction, preferring to use the color Krak. Which is the core color of jackfruit or dark yellowish brown And Mahanikaya monks will use golden yellow the color called “royal popular color” is a color that is in the middle between the two denominations.
